David F. Vedder, P.A. Assists Pro Bono Client Obtain Special Immigrant Juvenile Status

After the Guardian Ad Litem Program of Florida contacted David F. Vedder, PA to take on the pro bono case of a Guatemalan child, Mr. Vedder did not hesitate to take on this case. The child was in removal proceedings at the Orlando Immigration Court where he risked deportation.

Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJ) refers to the status given to immigrant children who have been found by a state court to be abused, neglected, or abandoned by their parents. In addition, the court must find that it is not in the best interest of the child to return to their country of origin.

Collaborating with the Guardian Ad Litem program, we were able to obtain a guardianship order that declared that the child had been abandoned by his parents in Guatemala and that it was not in his best interest to return to Guatemala.

Upon receiving the court order, our office filed an SIJ petition on behalf of the child. USCIS immediately approved the child’s application. Due to this approval, the immigration judge in Orlando, Florida terminated the child’s removal proceedings. Now the child is able to file for adjustment of status so that he can be on his way to become a permanent resident of United States.
