CNN: Families Crossing the Border: "We Are Not Criminals"

CNN reports on the growing concerns about the Obama administration's practice of detaining women and children in family detention centers amid a rise in the number of family units apprehended at the U.S. border, which grew to 77,674 in FY2016. "The government's detention policies here in the United States are not going to stop families from coming if they fear for their safety and their lives because of violence in their home countries," stated AILA member Denise Gilman, who represents families who are detained. In September 2016, the DHS Advisory Committee on Family Residential Centers issued a draft report concluding that "detention is generally neither appropriate nor necessary for families." Its official report is expected to be published this month. Read this story and more in AILA's daily immigration news clips.
