The
New York Times reports that Texas's refugee coordinator sent a letter to the federal
Office of Refugee Resettlement on Wednesday stating that if Texas's
plan to limit the number of refugees it accepts and to receive additional
security assurances is not approved by September 30, 2016, Texas will
exit the federal program and stop providing refugee-related services and
benefits starting February 1, 2017. The article notes that if Texas does
withdraw, it "may have little to no effect" on refugee resettlements
in Texas, because federal officials and local groups could bypass the
state in coordinating resettlements.
