Houston Chronicle: Private Prisons Boom in Texas and Across America Under Trump's Immigration Crackdown

The Houston Chronicle reports that the private prison business is booming as President Trump attempts to carry out his campaign promise to crack down on undocumented immigrants. Since assuming office, President Trump has ended a policy that had narrowed the scope of immigrants targeted for deportation in the United States to those with more serious criminal convictions, and also reversed a plan to phase out for-profit detention centers for federal prisoners. In the first three months of his presidency, at least 113,828 immigrants were locked up in 180 different facilities nationwide—a 10 percent increase over that period in 2016.
