ICE Immigration Raids: A Primer

To help gauge the extent to which a large-scale enforcement surge has begun under the Trump administration, the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) released a report examining targeted ICE enforcement actions during the past few years. The report found that while ICE apprehended and removed an average of 1,250 individuals each week from the interior of the United States during FY2016, most of those apprehensions did not involve picking up individuals directly from the community in which they lived, but occurred instead when ICE assumed custody of individuals arrested or detained by local, state, and other federal law enforcement agencies. As this Vox article notes, ICE agents in last week's raids broke with years of Obama administration policy by making "collateral arrests." Read today's Immigration Politics Ticker for additional insight into the historical context of last week's aggressive enforcement actions.
