Reuters: Parents Fearing Deportation Pick Guardians for U.S. Children

Reuters reports that undocumented immigrant parents in the United States are inundating immigration advocates with requests for help in securing care for their children in the event they are deported under the Trump administration. AILA member Helen Ramirez said that she is getting about six phone calls a day from undocumented parents; last year, she had no such calls. "Their biggest fear is that their kids will end up in foster care," Ramirez stated. About five million children under the age of 18 are living with at least one parent who is an undocumented immigrant, according to a 2016 study by the Migration Policy Institute. The study found that most of the children—79 percent—were U.S. citizens. Read this story and more in AILA's daily immigration news clips.
