Today,
DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson announced that the government plans to resume regular deportations of Haitians.
Secretary Johnson stated that Haitian nationals currently covered by Temporary
Protected Status (TPS) will be unaffected by this policy change, and that
the Haitian Family Reunification Parole program remains in effect.
AILA expressed serious concerns that this decision could endanger asylum seekers and other vulnerable
immigrants. Stated AILA Executive Director Ben Johnson in a press release,
"The lack of transparency shrouding this announcement is alarming
given the conditions that await those slated for removal. If the federal
government believes conditions have improved in Haiti to such an extent
as to justify this change in policy, tell us the facts and figures and
prove that Haitians will not be deported back to an unsafe situation."
