How to identify immigration scams

On Behalf of | Aug 18, 2022 | Immigration Law

Immigration scams are getting sophisticated with each passing day, and if you are not careful, you may fall victim. It can be rather heartbreaking when you find out you’ve been dealing with a scammer in your immigration process after going through all the paperwork and possibly, spending a fortune.

These scams come in various ways, from telephone calls to emails purporting to be coming from the immigration department. Below are some of the red flags you need to be wary of.

Paying for immigration forms

When someone asks you to pay for immigration forms, it is likely a scam. Immigration forms are free, although there may be fees involved in the application process. It is important to note that cash payments are not standard and only checks, money orders or credit cards are acceptable.

False guarantees

If you are getting too good a deal that guarantees success in your application, you should proceed carefully. Only immigration officials have the power to deny or grant entry, and in most cases, they do not directly contact the applicant.

Questionable credentials

If you have doubts about the credentials of the person you are dealing with, it is advisable to double-check. Be wary of people who refer to themselves by vague titles, like “representative” or “advisor.” They may be trying to imply they’re attorneys without actually saying that — and they may not have the training you expect them to have.

Get the necessary help

You cannot leave anything to chance when handling your immigration paperwork. Otherwise, you may lose your money and time to fraudulent individuals who are out to prey on people’s misinformation and desperation.

It is advisable to reach out to an expert who fully understands the immigration process and has your best interests at heart. It could save you a lot of disappointments.
