The state of Florida has some stringent laws on immigration, but it also recognizes the importance of families being together. Thus, there are several lawful routes that families can take.

While applying for permanent residency may be an option, many families require a temporary stopgap. This can come in the form of family visas. What types of family visas are available in Florida?

Visas for romantic partners and immediate family

There are several types of visas available for romantic partners. The best type of visa to apply for will largely depend on whether or not the couple is married or intend to get married.

A K-1 fiancée visa applies to partners who have not yet married but intend to marry in the state. A non-U.S. fiancée can apply for this visa if their partner is a U.S. citizen. However, the marriage must take place within 90 days of the non-U.S. fiancée entering the U.S.

Spouses who are already married to a U.S. citizen can typically apply for two visas. Firstly, they may apply for a K-3 spousal visa. Or, they may opt to apply for an immediate relative visa. This visa can also be utilized for children and parents.

Visas for other family members

Families can take advantage of the previously mentioned visas for romantic partners and immediate family members. But what about extended family?

Florida also allows family preference visas. These can be used for siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles and other extended family members.

Family visas are only one small part of the immigration process. The law in this area can be complex. That’s why it’s so important to seek legal guidance before starting any formal applications.
