Visas for student immigrants coming to Florida

America offers many educational opportunities, but international students need a visa to learn in America.

The U.S. offers three primary types of student visas — each one catering to different educational needs and circumstances. Learn more to find the ideal visa for your academic or vocational pursuits.

The F-1 visa

Probably the most common type of student visa, the F-1 visa is intended for those who wish to study at an accredited U.S. college or university or to study English at an English language institute.

F-1 visa holders must maintain a full course load and can work on campus for up to 20 hours per week. They may also be eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT) and Curricular Practical Training (CPT), which allow them to gain work experience in their field of study.

The M-1 visa

This visa is available for students who plan to engage in vocational or non-academic studies at a U.S. institution, including technical and vocational programs.

Unlike F-1 visa holders, M-1 students may not work during their studies and must complete their program within a fixed time frame. Extensions are possible only for medical reasons.

The J-1 visa

Exchange visitors participating in programs that promote cultural exchange typically need a J-1 visa. It is often used for students, researchers and teachers who wish to participate in exchange programs.

J-1 visa holders may be subject to a two-year home-country physical presence requirement. This means they must return to their home country for at least two years after the program ends before they can apply for certain other U.S. visas.

As you can see, the U.S. welcomes eager learners and professionals in the educational sciences. Having experienced legal guidance can help you obtain the right visa.
