New bill aims to protect Venezuelan immigrants from deportation

On Behalf of | May 10, 2025 | Immigration Law

There’s a new bill in Florida, and it has bipartisan support from both Democratic and Republican representatives. It is known as the Venezuela TPS Act of 2025. TPS stands for Temporary Protected Status, which could be applied to immigrants within the United States. In this case, the bill focuses on immigrants from Venezuela who have already arrived.

This is a response to recent developments by the current presidential administration, which has been seeking to remove temporary legal protections from these Venezuelans. There are currently around 350,000 people who could be affected. If they lose their protections and the Supreme Court agrees with the administration, then this would open the door for them to be deported back to Venezuela. This bill seeks to prevent that from happening.

Why is TPS used?

Temporary Protected Status is used when someone comes from a country that is unsafe. There could be civil strife there, such as war or persecution. There may be a natural disaster, such as flooding or a wildfire. For any of these reasons, it’s not safe for people to return, so they are given TPS that allows them to stay in the United States.

This bill would not provide them with protected status forever, however. Initially, if it passes, they would only get this status for 18 months. When that runs out, there would be an option to renew it if it is still necessary. This way, the government could consider the situation at home and determine whether it was actually safe for these individuals to return.

It will be very important to keep an eye on this bill to see if there are any legal changes to the way immigration laws work and the protected status enjoyed by certain immigrants. Those who are affected need to know exactly what legal steps to take.
