What to expect during a marriage green card interview

On Behalf of | Jul 25, 2025 | Immigration Law

One of the ways immigrants can seek residency and work in the United States is by marrying a U.S. citizen. However, a marriage must be genuine if an immigrant spouse wants to enter the U.S. To prove a marriage is genuine, spouses may need to prepare for a marriage green card interview.

During a marriage green card interview, couples may be asked several very personal questions about their life, relationship and plans for the future. These questions can add a lot of pressure for immigrants who have already gone through a lengthy and stressful immigration process. Couples can prepare in advance by learning about what questions may be asked during a marriage green card interview. Here is what you should know:

Questions about your relationship

Many of the questions couples may be asked during a green card interview will be related to their relationship. Couples can expect questions such as the following:

  • When and where did you meet?
  • What happened during your first date?
  • Who proposed to whom?
  • Who attended the wedding?

It is important to answer truthfully during an interview.

Questions about daily life

An immigration interviewer may also ask questions about each spouse’s personal life. Some questions that may be asked include:

  • What time does your spouse wake up?
  • Does your spouse have any children?
  • Where does your spouse work?
  • What is your spouse’s favorite meal?

Some questions may be intentionally hard to answer.

Questions about the future

Couples may also be expected to answer questions related to their future life in the U.S. An interviewer may ask the following questions:

Do you plan on having children?

  • What type of work will you have in the States?
  • Will you go to school for a higher education?
  • Do you plan on buying a house?

Professional legal guidance can help couples prepare for their green card interview.
