What if I need extra help with the naturalization exam?

On Behalf of | Aug 18, 2024 | Immigration Law

If you are considering applying to become a United States citizen, then you probably know that you have to take a two-part naturalization exam and go through an interview. You may have heard all sorts of things about these that leave you worrying whether you can pass them.

Starting to practice early enough gives you time to build up your knowledge to a level where you should hopefully complete the naturalization exam without a problem. But in some cases, you might face extra challenges that make taking it harder for you than for most people. Is there any way to even things out to give you a fair chance?

You can request special accommodations for a disability

If you have a physical or learning disability that would make it tougher for you to complete the test in the required time, then you may be eligible to seek accommodations. You should apply for these in advance.

Examples could include being given the test in Braille or being allowed to answer verbally rather than write your answers down. Other options may include having someone with you to help with certain tasks, being allowed more time to complete the test or taking it off-site.

Seeking legal guidance on how best to go about things is wise in such situations. This can help you thoroughly document why you need certain accommodations and can increase the likelihood that you get a fair chance to complete the necessary steps successfully and reach your goal of becoming a U.S. citizen with all the benefits that can bring.
